Def Leppard Hysteria Review

As much as we love rock ‘n’ roll and 80s music, this reviewer has never really paid much attention to the iconic British band called Def Leppard. Perhaps we will after a few sessions in this branded Play’n Go rock range installment however, and Def Leppard Hysteria comes with a high-energy soundtrack consisting of some of the band’s biggest hits. The band itself is missing however, which seems a bit strange, and it kind of feels like you caught the show in the middle of a longer break.

Even the symbols are not super-related to the band, although you get both leopards and a British flag electric guitar. As is the case in many Play’n Go grid slots, it’s all about charging the meter to trigger modifiers. In this case you get wilds, and eventually a longer cascading streak will activate all letter positions to spell out ‘Sugar’ below the grid. This triggers the dropping increasing multiplier wild bonus round, and you can win up to 10,000x your stake.

You win by landing 5 to 15+ matching symbols in a cluster anywhere on the grid, and the premium symbols pay 80 to 1,000 x your stake for 15+ matching symbols in a cluster. All winning symbols are removed via the Cascading mechanic, and the gaps are filled by new and/or existing symbols dropping down.

At random times on non-winning spins only, you may trigger the Break It Up feature. You will then see all the symbols shuffle around to new positions, and 3 to 6 wild symbols will then be added randomly across the grid. This will usually lead to a win.

The Fire Me Up Meter on the right-hand side will display a random pay symbol per spin, and if the selected symbol forms a winning cluster the symbols are collected in the meter. If you manage to fully charge the meter with 4 winning symbols within the same cascading sequence, you get 3 to 6 wilds added randomly to the grid. The meter then resets, but it can be filled again within the same cascading sequence.

The word ‘Sugar’ is spelled across 5 center positions as the game starts, but the letters jump around to new random positions per spin.

The Fire Me Up Meter is charged the same way as in the base game, but it awards Dropping Multiplier Wilds during the bonus round. The wilds drop down one position per cascade, destroying symbols below, and each drop increases the wild multiplier by +1. This means that you can achieve a wild multiplier of x7 at best, before the wild drops off the grid. Keep in mind however, that only the highest multiplier is applied if more than one is part of the same win.

Finally, you can trigger the Sugar Me Sweet feature on random non-winning free spins, and this transforms 6 to 9 symbols into the symbol that’s on display in the Fire Me Up Meter. This, of course, is enough to charge the meter, so it basically guarantees a batch of dropping increasing multiplier wilds.

Review Summary

We’ve really enjoyed Play’n Go’s branded rock series so far, but Def Leppard Hysteria didn’t make a very strong impression.

It’s basically all about prolonging cascading streaks via the random wilds from the Fire Me Up Meter, but the whole random wild counter screen is an unnecessary and annoying break from the action. Just spread the wilds out there and let’s go already. Eventually, this takes you to the bonus round, where the dropping wilds with increasing multipliers may help you crack the 10,000x potential. Your chance is 1 in 1 billion though, and while being a decent game overall, it’s among the weakest in Play’n Go’s branded rock range.
