Saxon Review
“She’s got wheeeeels, wheels of steel”. Play’n Go is back with yet another banger metal slot in their branded rock series, and this time it’s the british new wave heavy metal band, Saxon, that’s been graced with their very own video slot. Choose from a selection of 8 smashing hit songs, or let the game shuffle between them, and enjoy the smell of cheap bourbon and gasoline with the notion that these grandfather headbangers are still rocking hard to this day (with or without rollators).
Jokes aside, Saxon slot is very well made, as usual from this developer, and fans of the legendary band will hardly be disappointed. The features are on the simpler side though, but they can be deadly effective when everything falls into place in the right way. You’ll benefit from a progressive win multiplier that increases for each stacked reel you get, and all wilds that land are fully stacked by default here. The bonus round is introduced with a stunning animation involving the lead singer, Biff Byford, and a Harley.
We’re not gonna spoil all the details for you regarding that, but we promise you it will be well worth the wait. The volatility is pretty high in this game for sure, but then again, you can win up to 10,000x your stake here. This is well above usual from this developer, but it’s still only half-way to what Play’n Go’s thrash metal masterpiece, Testament, is capable of. The audiovisual presentation is rock solid here (no pun intended), and although there are no game-changing features, it’s all very well put together with a pleasing pace and feel to it.

What are the bonus features?
The bonus features in Saxon slot are not overly complicated, but they can certainly be effective enough under the right conditions. You will benefit from “hard as a nail” stacked wilds that always cover the full reels when they land. The wild also happens to be the most valuable symbol in the game, and it pays 50x your stake for 5 on a payline according to the paytable.
However, landing 5 wilds on a single payline is not really possible anyway, as the wild always lands fully stacked. The wild symbol is not the only stacked symbol in this game however, as all the other symbols can land fully stacked also.
Whenever this happens, the win multiplier above the reels will increase by +1, and it increases by +2 for every stacked wild you land.Free spins in SaxonYou need to land the vocalist, Biff Byford, symbol and a motorcycle symbol at the same time to trigger the free spins bonus round in Saxon. The 2 symbols will merge in the middle, and you’ll see a very cool animation play out where the lead singer drives his bike from a bar and out on the open highway. You will then be granted a random number of free spins between 5 and 15.
If you had already racked up a win multiplier on the triggering spin, it will be carried over into the free spins round. The multiplier will keep increasing the same way that it does in the base game, but now it does not reset between spins. You can add more free spins to your tally by landing at least 2 scatters (singer and/or motorcycle) on the same spin, and this will again give you between 5 and 15 new spins. There is no upper limit as to how many times you can retrigger the bonus round like this.

This opens up the “set list” jukebox, and allows you to choose between 8 different Saxon hit songs. You can also set the playlist on shuffle mode, and it will alternate between songs as you play. The songs you can choose from are as follows:
- 747 (Strangers in the Night)
- Wheels of Steel
- Heavy Metal Thunder
- Strong Arm of the Law
- Dallas 1pm
- Princess of the Night
- And the Bands Played On
- Denim and Leather
The next thing you can do is click the “i” button below the musical note, as this takes you into the game’s paytable. Here you can read all about the different features, and check out the illustrations that might make things even more clear for you. Scroll to slide 3 to get to the symbol values, where you’ll see that the black leather jacket with the red Saxon logo is the highest paying regular symbol.
SaxonThis is a dynamic paytable per usual from this developer, and it means that the symbol values will reflect your chosen total stake.
Speaking of, you can scroll through the bet range via the arrows below the reels, and set your bet level between 10p and £100 per spin. Finally, you can set up the autoplay feature with between 10 and 100 autospins, and you can also set different win and loss limits in there to stop the feature as you see fit.Where to play Saxon?

The 200 Spins Saxon Experience
This reviewer had not even heard of Saxon before, despite growing up in the 80s. This should tell you that we are not really big metal fans, except for Metallica on some occasions. Still, we enjoyed the soundtrack quite a bit, and we might just add a few of their hit songs to our mixed Spotify list. It got us pumped at least, and we felt ready as ever to take this one for a test spin.
We started by cranking the bet level up to the maximum of £100 per spin, just to demonstrate how we are really “living on the edge” here. “Rock n’ roll through and through”, that’s us and David Brent (Ricky Garvais) from The Office (unforgettable scene). Anyway, the volatility is pretty high, so we expected a lot of dead spins and minor wins before anything happened.
However, we got lucky with a decent 21x our stake win not too far into our 200 spins session. This came about because 2 stacks of star symbols landed, and gave us a 3x multiplier win. The pace of the game is decent enough, and you can always turn on the fast play option if you want to move things along even faster.
After the initial bigger win, we landed mostly dead spins and smaller wins for a while, and the motorcycle teased us a couple of times without landing the second singer scatter. Finally, towards the middle of our session, we landed both the singer and the motorcycle on the same spin. We first got a 22.8x win, and a 2x multiplier that would be carried over into the bonus round.
Play’n Go has done an excellent job with the bonus round intro, and we got 12 free spins to start with, which was pretty good. The multiplier kept building, and on the 7th free spin we won 27x our stake. In total we won 53.4x our stake here, but this included the initial triggering win also. Not the biggest haul perhaps, but we got a fairly good demonstration of what this game is capable of when lady fortuna is on your side.
Review Summary
Saxon is a band that’s still very much going strong to this day, which is impressive in and of itself. We are pretty sure this game will convert quite a few new fans, perhaps from the younger generation, and it certainly had that effect on us. Saxon slot runs like the well-oiled cylinders in Biff Byford’s Harley, and it comes with super-cool animations and a soundtrack packed with heavy hitters.
The features might not be super original or earth-shakingly innovative, but neither is the band. Still, both got more than enough guts and glory to keep you entertained. With the possibility of wins up to 10,000x your stake, you have a big enough carrot to keep banging for a while here. Those who hate the band, and/or metal music in general, might not be all that impressed, but we recommend that everybody else check this one out, as it might take you by surprise.
Pros
- Stacked symbols and wilds increase win multiplier
- Free spins where the multiplier does not reset
- High volatility and 10,000x max win potential
Cons
- Not for those who dislike the band and/or heavy metal
- Beware of customizable RTP ranges
