Megaways Jack Review
Iron Dog had their Megaways debut in late 2019 with Pirate Kingdom Megaways. It went quite well, and Megaways Jack is their anticipated follow-up game released around half a year later. Some features have been “walked over” from their first attempt, but there is enough original juice here to make it well-worth a squeeze or two. Fans of the debut slot will hardly be disappointed, and the game is just about original enough to escape any copycat claims or labels.
One thing is certain, Megaways Jack slot is very different from the most famous game based on the british fairytale, namely NetEnt’s Jack and the Beanstalk. In fact, it’s like comparing a Volkswagen with a Monster truck. Sporting up to 117,649 ways to win and 2 to 7 symbols on each of the 6 reels, you’re in for quite a volatile joyride here. Similar to the first game, it’s all about getting enough tumbling wins in a row to fill the left-hand side meter, which again takes you to the bonus round.
Luckly, there are some features that will help you out in that department, namely magical beans and a ditto magical golden harp. The big attraction is the unlimited progressive win multiplier you’ll benefit from when it finally happens, and you can get plenty of different combinations of spins and starting multipliers in this game. The max win potential is a solid 25,000x your stake, but it’s naturally limited by the somewhat low max bet of £20 per stake (which is not unusual for these kinds of games). All in all, a somewhat safe (but still solid) second attempt from Iron Dog.

What symbols are there?
Jack is the main character in this well-known fairytale, so it’s only reasonable that he’s also the most valuable symbol. The golden goose might have deserved a higher ranking position, but instead you’ll find the giant as a good number two. All the royal symbols of lower value are also in place here, and you need between 3 and 6 matching symbols on a payline to win.
Here we present you with the paytable for Megaways Jack slot:- Jack - Pays 25x for 6 in a combo
- Giant - Pays 7.5x for 6 in a combo
- Mum - Pays 5x for 6 in a combo
- Golden goose - Pays 2x for 6 in a combo
- Cow - Pays 2x for 6 in a combo
- Royal symbols - Pay between 2x and 0.6x for 6 in a combo
What are the bonus features?
The bonus features you’ll find in Megaways Jack might not be extremely innovative compared to the first game, but at least they are plentiful and fun. The tumbling reels feature is in place, as it usually is, and this means winning symbols are removed to be replaced by new ones dropping down from above. The process goes on until you land a non-winning cascade.
To the right-hand side of the reels you’ll see the beanstalk leading up to the giant’s castle in the sky. It has 8 leaves that Jack will use to climb it, and one leaf turn golden per tumbling win in the base game. Sometimes you’ll land 1, 2 or 4 magic beans to help you, as each one of these magic beans add 1 golden leaf to the bonus meter (if you can call it that).
On the left-hand side of the reels, and directly attached to the frame, is the magical golden harp. This magical harp will be plucked at random times by a golden lady who’s actually part of the instrument, and this gives you one of the following bonus features:
- Up to 4 wilds added randomly to the reels
- 3 extra golden leaves on the beanstalk
- Beanstalk level frozen and 1 free respin given
- Up to a 5x multiplier boost
Triggering the free spins bonus round is all about creating a golden pathway to the heavenly riches of the giant in the sky. There are 8 leaves on the right-hand side of the beanstalk, and when you manage to turn all of them golden, you’ll trigger the free spins round. The beanstalk does not stop at 8 leaves though, as that’s just what’s visible in the base game.
Turning 8 leaves golden is just the bare minimum of what this bonus round has to offer.
You can turn up to 13 leaves golden here, and the higher you go the better your potential for big wins will be. Here is a breakdown of what you get per golden leaf level:- 8 golden leaves gives you 8 free spins.
- 9 golden leaves gives you 9 free spins.
- 10 golden leaves gives you 10 spins with a 2x multiplier.
- 11 golden leaves gives you 11 spins with a 2x multiplier.
- 12 golden leaves gives you 12 spins with a 3x multiplier.
- 13 golden leaves gives you 12 spins with a 3x multiplier with increased chance of landing the golden harp symbol.
There is an unlimited progressive win multiplier in play here too, and it starts at whatever golden leaf level you have achieved (as described above). It will increase by 1 point for each win/tumble, and whenever you land a reel with the maximum number of 7 symbols, that reel will land 7 symbols for the rest of the feature. This also adds 1 point to the progressive multiplier.
You will get 2 extra free spins when you get 4 consecutive tumble wins, and you also get 1 extra spin if you lock a reel on the very last free spin. The harp rewards are more or less the same as in the base game, but you’ll now only get a multiplier boost up to 3x. You can also get up to 4 extra free spins or up to 4 wilds added to the reels.
It’s possible to buy the free spins feature in some jurisdictions, and the options are slightly different from what you can trigger organically in the game.
You can pick and choose as follows:- 6 spins for 40x your stake
- 8 spins for 70x your stake
- 9 spins for 90x your stake
- 10 spins with 2x multiplier for 110x your stake
- 11 spins with 2x multiplier for 150x your stake
- 12 spins with 3x multiplier for 200x your stake
- 12 spins with 3x multiplier and more harp events for 240x your stake
How to play
Each developer has their own unique take on what’s the best game interface, and Iron Dog has some unique twists that make them stick out. Experienced players will probably have no trouble orienting themselves, but newbies and beginners should pay attention. We’ll run through all the essentials here, so you are good and ready once the reels start spinning.
You can start by checking out the hamburger menu up in the left corner. This usually takes you into the game’s paytable, but not this time. Instead, you are taken into the game settings, where you can toggle on/off the sound effects and/or the background music. You can also tick off for the Fast Play option, which we highly recommend that you do. Removing the intro screen the next time you load the game is also an option, as well as using the spacebar as a spin button.
That’s really it for the hamburger menu, as the only other icon in there is your game history, which we presume is not relevant at this time.
To find the paytable, you need to click the . icon down at the bottom left-hand side. The first thing you’ll see is the game rules screen, where you can get a full overview of all the essential info about this game and how to play it.Click the trophy icon to finally get to the paytable, which is not dynamic by the way. It displays the same symbol values no matter what total stake you’ve chosen. You need to divide the displayed symbol values by 20 (the minimum total coin bet) to get wins per total stake here. In there you’ll also find info and images that help illustrate how the different bonus features work.
Finally, the time has come to choose your bet level between 20p and £20, and you can also choose to display the values in coins or stick with cash, it’s all up to you. Setting up the autoplay feature is simple, as you choose between 5 and 999 auto spins. You also have plenty of options when to stop the autospins, like when triggering the bonus round or winning/losing a certain amount.

The 200 Spins Megaways Jack Experience
Whenever a new Megaways engine game is up for review, there is always excitement in the air. We were eager to check out this fairytale-based game for sure, and we went with a total stake of £1 per spin, as usual. We then ticked off for the Fast play option, and loaded up the autoplay feature with our first 99 spins.
We often, half-jokingly, talk about how “oddly satisfying” the gameplay is, and Megaways Jack is somewhere in the middle (with the Fast play option on, that is). Turning 8 leaves golden seems almost impossible as you keep getting 2 or 3 leaves turned, before they “wither” back to green again. This takes up a bit too much time, but it’s probably a clever marketing trick to get impatient players to go for the feature buy option (which just happens to be placed right on top of the beanstalk).
Anyway, our first 99 spins were quite uneventful to be totally honest, and the chain sound following each tumble was beginning to make us feel like a slave chained to a millstone. We had some smaller wins, and the harp lady handed out some wilds and a multiplier, but nothing of significance happened until our final 99 spins.
By some combined tumbling reel and multiple harp god miracle, we managed to turn 9 leaves golden almost immediately. This gave us 9 free spins, with the progressive multiplier starting at 1x. The bonus round turned out to be quite uneventful too, unfortunately, as we won only 17.5x in total with the “unlimited” multiplier going no higher than 5x.
After our last spin was finished for this session, we were down quite a bit. Out of curiosity, we decided to buy the highest priced free spin option with 12 spins, 3x starting multiplier and increased chances for golden harp action. It did not deliver any miracles for us this time, but we got up to a 13x multiplier and ended up with a total win of 98.5x our stake (we paid 240x). Not our lucky day to say the least, and we hope you have better beginner’s luck with Megaways Jack slot than we did.
Review Summary
It’s natural to compare Megaways Jack to the first Megaways engine game from Iron Dog, Pirate Kingdom Megaways, since this is only their second utilization of the coveted Megaways licence. While there are similarities, Megaways Jack is unique enough to stand on its own two feet. Some features have been borrowed, and the volatility is still high. However, the max win potential of 25,000x has been lowered significantly since the first game, although it’s still solid compared to many Megaways engine titles that come with a £250,000 max win cap.
Pros
- 4 random golden harp features
- Free spins with unlimited progressive multiplier
- Win up to 25,000x your stake
Cons
- Very high volatility
- Requires patience and a cool head
If you enjoy Megaways Jack you should also try:
There are plenty of games based around fairytales, and Jack and his beanstalk adventure has been portrayed most famously by NetEnt, but also many other developers have taken a stab at this legend. We will here present you with some games you’ll probably enjoy if you already liked Megaways Jack slot.
Pirate Kingdom Megaways - is natural to start with, as Megaways Jack is somewhat similar to the first Megaways title from Iron Dog. You’ll benefit from 2x multiplying multiplier wilds in the base game here, as well as locked 7-symbol reels and an unlimited progressive multiplier in the bonus round (sounds kind of familiar, we know).
Jack and the Beanstalk from NetEnt might not be a Megaways title, but it’s still legendary, and deserving of a place in the spotlight here. Visually, NetEnt’s take on the fairytale looks almost better than this game, which is a feat given that it was released back in 2013. The highlight is when Jack climbs the beanstalk in the bonus round, and goes on a treasure hunt looting the two-headed giant.
Wilds and the Beanstalk - is not really based on Jack’s adventure with the Giant, but you’ll still climb plenty of beanstalks here. There is an innovative bonus map with different wild patterns for each of the 22 levels, and you trigger the bonus round by climbing up to the top. The bonus round comes with sticky wilds, and a choice of 1 of 5 treasure bonus chests for each of the 4 levels you can reach.
