Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno Review

With the release of Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno we’re already half-way through Thunderkick’s high risk/reward series, and in terms of potential this is a step up from the previous release. There are not too many surprises here however, compared to the 2 first releases. The math model is pretty similar, and the features remain simple and “old school”. Of course, the theme is quite different, as this time it centers around the 3-headed Hound of Hades, guarding the portal to the underworld, as well as your access to the big wins.

This Cerberus hell-hound is pretty far from your aunts fluffy chihuahua, and the mythological creature is vividly depicted when you enter the bonus round. As for the basics, the game plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 9 ways to win, and you can place bets between 10p and £100 per spin across all handheld devices such as Android, iPhone and iPad. You’ll feel the heat from the boiling underworld as you spin the reels, and drops of sweat will form on your forehead as you realize just how deep water you’re in with this game.

It can take a long time to get a single decent win here, and most likely it will come from one or more stacked wilds that slam down like thunderbolts when you least expect it. If you have the patience to power through enough dead spins (and measly wins), the bonus round has the potential to reward you handsomely for your bravery. A 6,666x max win potential might seem like a joke, but we won a very solid payout on a single bonus round spin in our first 200 spin test run. In fact, we came pretty close to the original number of the beast, which was enough for us to understand the mighty potential possessed by this highly volatile beast of a game.

What symbols are there?

Cerberus is known as the hound of Hades, and it’s a 3-headed mean-looking dog that guards the gates of the underworld so the dead cannot escape. This mythological creature is not only the highest paying symbol, but a golden statue version of it is also the second most valuable regular symbol here. You need between 2 and 5 matching symbols in a combo to win, except for the lower value royal symbols where you need between 3 and 5 matching symbols to win. Here is the paytable for Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno slot:

  • Scatter emblem - Pays 200x for 5 anywhere
  • Cerberus - Pays 150x for 5 on a payline
  • Golden Hound of Hades statue - Pays 50x for 5 on a payline
  • Greek vase - Pays 25x for 5 on a payline
  • Helmet - Pays 22.5x for 5 on a payline
  • Battle axe - Pays 20x for 5 on a payline
  • Royal symbols - Pay either 10x or 7.5x for 5 on a payline

What are the bonus features?

Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno is not a very feature rich game at all, which means that the bonus features you do get are all the more important.

You’ll benefit from 2 different wild symbols in this game, and the regular wild will step in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combinations.

We should also mention that this regular wild will only land fully stacked, and thus cover the whole reel whenever it decides to show up. Perhaps this makes it a bit less regular, but it has no other extras attached to it. This can still be very helpful in the base game, and even more so in the bonus round.

Speaking of, the second wild symbol serves double duty as a Golden Cerberus Emblem scatter symbol. You win 2x, 20x or 200x your stake when you land 3, 4 or 5 of this wild/scatter anywhere in sight. This is also how you trigger the game's all-important free spins feature.

Free spins in Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno

The Golden Cerberus Emblem scatter/wild is, as mentioned above, the key to triggering the free spins bonus round. You need to land at least 3 scatters anywhere on the same spin to trigger the free spins feature. This gives you 10 free spins no matter how many scatters you actually land on the triggering spin.

In the bonus round you’ll play with 243 ways to win, as compared to the regular 9 paylines in the base game. As a consequence of this upgrade, you will now win as long as you land 2 or more premium symbols on consecutive reels starting at reel 1 (you still need 3 of the royal symbols, but the same applies for them).

You can also retrigger the free spins round by landing at least 3 scatters on the same free spin, and there is no upper limit as to how many times you can do this.

How to play

Thunderkick has a modern and intuitive game interface, and we’ll take a closer look at everything you should know before you get started with this game here. If you are an experienced player you might wanna skim through this part, or perhaps jump right to the next section. However, beginners and newcomers should definitely pay attention.

The 9 dot icon down in the left-hand side corner is our first destination, as this opens up the paytable. Per usual with this developer, the paytable is dynamic. This means that it displays how much each symbol is worth depending on your chosen bet level. You can also read all about the game’s bonus features in there, and check out the paylines.

The document icon (above the paytable trophy icon) takes you into the game rules.

Here everything is formally laid out for you, and some game stats are also revealed. Thunderkick has also included an Outcome Control center here, and you enter this somewhat unusual feature via the OC icon in the top left corner. Here you can set up different outcomes, like triggering big wins or the bonus round when you play the demo game.

The volume can only be switched on or off here, and we miss a game settings option where you can toggle on fast play and turn off/on sound effects and music. Anyway, the time has come to choose your bet level between 10p and £100, and then you can set up the autoplay feature or spin the reels manually. Between 5 and 5,000 autospins are possible here, and you can also stop the feature when you trigger the bonus round.

The 200 Spins Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno Experience

It’s funny how different high volatility games come across these days, despite the fact that they are all supposed to be of the same volatility. Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno is definitely an “old school” high volatility game. It can take a long time to trigger the bonus round here, but when it first happens you can sometimes win massive payouts.

Eager to see what Thunderkick had come up with this time, we set the bet level to £1 per spin and loaded up the autoplay feature with 250 spins. Beating this beast would not be easy, we knew that much from the get-go, but we were determined to give it our best shot. We hardly saw a single stacked wild in our first 70 spins, and we mostly landed dead spins and insignificant wins.

When we finally landed a double set of stacked wilds, it gave us a decent 30x payout, but this was hardly enough to begin to cover our losses thus far. We kept waiting for the bonus round to trigger, but it just kept dragging on for what seemed like an eternity. We were just about to give up when it finally happened, and boy was it worth our while!

At first, nothing seemed to happen even in the bonus round. We landed only dead spins here too, and cursed like a stranded sailor as we closed in on the 10th and final free spin. On the 9th spin we landed a double stack of wilds on reels 2 and 3, and this gave us a 533x our stake mega win. That just shows how patience pays off with these kinds of games, and we ended up with a solid profit and a huge smile on our face from our 200 spins test session.

Review Summary

Being the third installment in Thunderkick’s high risk/reward “Beat the Beast” series, it’s become clear that they don’t want either of the games to stick out too much from each other. Cerberus Inferno slot is right in the middle between the 2 previous releases when it comes to potential, and a 6,666x max win is, of course, very suitable for a game about the hellish underworld.

In terms of innovation, there is not much to see here. Thunderkick dampened our expectations somewhat with the second release, as it was a step down from the powerful first release. All in all, this third game in the series is a clever and devious beast, but it can dish out massive rewards if you have the stomach, patience and bankroll to wait it out.

Pros

  • Stacked wilds and scatter wins
  • Free spins with 243 ways to win
  • High volatility and 6,666x max win potential

Cons

  • Nothing new or innovative to see here

Not all that many slots have been made that centers around the 3-headed Hound of Hades, but we know of at least one that’s worth checking out. Here we’ll simply present you with the 2 previous games in the Beat the Beast series, as well as the third “mystery game” that also takes you to deep into the bowels of the underworld. Follow the link to read more about each game, and try out the free demo version.

Beat the Beast: Kraken’s Lair - beats the game at hand when it comes to max win potential, as you can win up to a lucky 7,777 times your stake here. This was the game that kicked off the 5 games “high danger” Beast series, and it’s arguably the best game in the series thus far. The defining feature is the expanding win feature, which makes regular symbols involved in a wild win expand to cover the full reel. The bonus round comes with a guaranteed wild on each spin, and we highly recommend you check this one out.

Beat the Beast Mighty Sphinx - is the second installment in the beast series, and there is a Mystery feature that can land you some solid base game wins here. In the bonus round, you get 1 to 3 golden emblems per spin. Via these emblems, there are extra spins up for grabs here. A regular symbol will be upgraded to a wild symbol if you retrigger the free spins feature.

Hades River of Souls - is a brand new Fantasma Gaming slot published by Microgaming. It takes you right into the underworld with a “river of soul wilds” above the regular reel setup. Here you can see potential special symbols (mostly wilds though) before they land, and you’ll also benefit from a progressive win multiplier that does not reset during the free spins bonus round.
